Editor’s Introduction
by Paul Genesse

The demons have been very busy. More worlds have been invaded and the members of the Crimson Pact have followed them . . . or their allies have risen to meet the demons at every turn. The long battle continues and in this fourth Crimson Pact anthology you’ll read seventeen stories of heroism and horror that span several speculative fiction genres. Half of the tales are modern dark urban fantasy (mostly at the end of the anthology), but the other half run the fantasy and sci-fi gamut.

You never know where you’ll end up on this dangerous journey, but to start things off you’ll find the gritty and powerful “Darkness of the Sun” by author Patrick M. Tracy. This is the first Crimson Pact novella and it’s a supernatural Western. You’ve already seen the main character on the cover, and you’ll soon find out why the demons hate him, and keep watch on him whenever he loads his pistols and rides into the desert.

The Crimson Pact Volume 3 We set them free, now we have to take them down.

The battle against the demonic horde rages on with fifteen blistering new stories from all across the multiverse. Make your mark in blood and join the Crimson Pact!

The Crimson Pact Volume 3 features fifteen action packed and frightening short stories, including, “That Which We Fear” by New York Times bestselling author Larry Correia, and Steven Diamond, which features Diego Santos, a bad ass marine who knows the exact time of his death, and Jarvis “Lazarus” Tombs, a federal agent who investigates the paranormal, and has the strange habit of coming come back from the dead. “The Ronin’s Mark” by Donald Darling is a story from an arch demon’s point of view and provides a fascinating study of what happens when a demon becomes too close to the world he is trying to destroy. “Whispers in the Code” by Patrick M. Tracy uncovers the sinister truth about the secrets found inside the internet, and those trying to stop the end of days. “Stumble and Fall” by Isaac Bell tells a tale of his famous character, John Olshoe, who recalls a time when he failed to be the hero. “Singe, Smolder, Torch, Whither” by Eric M. Bosarge is a creepy tale Stephen King could have written if he decided to write a story with a more literary style. “The Jar of Needs” by Patrick M. Tracy is about a depraved customer who will do anything for the sullen barrista he’s fallen in lust with. “Monsters on the Trail” by Patrick S. Tomlinson shows us what happens when investigators find out a demon may be involved with a political campaign. “David in Disguise” by Kelly Swails takes us to a 1960’s Chicago protest march where a young woman, who wants to be a journalist, finds out she may have to join the family business after all . . . and hunt demons. “Fallout from My Former Life” by Valerie Dircks proves that a young woman can never escape her past, especially at her high school prom. “The Recruit” by Craig Nybo profiles the boxing champion, Micky Atlas, in what may be his last fight . . . on Earth. EA Younker gives us a steampunk apocalypse story, “Fight” where the rebels steal an airship and take the battle to the demon-possessed bots who have destroyed their world. “The Third Eye” by Chanté McCoy tells the tragic story of a failed Greek Orthodox priest in the early 1900’s, who is unable to convince his countrymen that the demons are indeed coming. “A Contract Between Thieves” by Stephanie M. Lorée is one of the most entertaining stories in the anthology and is set in a “Italian Renaissance steampunk meets traditional sword & sorcery world” and features a rogue named Feni, and her lover, Raf, and their travails after Feni accepts the absolutely wrong job—that feels so right. “Shen Llamo’s Daughters,” takes us on a trip to Tibet in a time when the old customs of the mountain people, typified by pragmatic Yumi, battle with the new religion of Buddhism, and demonic spirits roam a haunted valley in the Himalayas. “The Scarlet Cloak” by Karen Bovenmyer, which book-ends this collection and will not soon be forgotten, is about a young woman who takes revenge on her enemies by using an artifact of terrible power that may consume her in the end, or perhaps it will set her true self free.

Eigth Day Geneis: A Worldbuilding Codex for Writers and Creatives (2012) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Eigth Day Genesis I was asked to write an essay for a worldbuilding anthology and I decided to write one called "The World as a Character." It's a concept I've been working on for several years and it was great to write it down. Below is the opening of my essay. The anthology is stacked with awesome essays.

Here's the description:

There's a moment when you can close your eyes and see a world of your own making.

It might start from a grain of sand, the way light filters through the trees, the feel of satin robes, the smell of cooking soup, or simply a wish for somewhere, somewhen else. It happens for different reasons for different people. Something, anything can pull your mind from the boundaries of our mundane world and set it to creating somewhere else.

Featuring Paul Genesse, Maurice Broaddus, Tim Waggoner, Matthew Wayne Selznick, Donald J. Bingle, Janine Spendlove, Bryan Young, and fifteen more authors, these essays range from crafting believable ecosystems, creatures, and legal systems to the ways you can most effectively share your world with your audience.

Eighth Day Genesis is meant to help writers with their worlds. The depth of your world is important…even essential. Worlds should be able to be touched, smelled, seen, and heard. Each of these things is vital to creating reality. The smallest details can illuminate volumes. It is surprising what details with bring forth entire feelings, associations, and images. Stereotypes can be broken, archetypes deviated from, and wonder spilled forth like gossip from an old friend.

This book will help you fill in those details and create the world you've always imagined.

The Crimson Pact Volume 2 (2011) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
The Crimson Pact Volume 2 The Pact is back and demons are as devious as ever in The Crimson Pact Volume 2.

Read 28 original stories (over 500 pages in print!), including many sequels to stories in volume one. Suzzanne Myers’s powerful flash fiction piece, "Withered Tree" continues with the exceptional short story, "Seven Dogs." Chanté McCoy’s "Inside Monastic Walls" is followed by the literally gut-wrenching follow-up short story, "Body and Soul." Urban fantasy mayhem is off the charts with rising star Patrick Tomlinson’s "Monsters in the Closet" and D. Robert Hamm’s "Karma." Steampunk your thing? EA Younker’s steampunk apocalypse tale "Stand," Sarah Hans’ sequel about professor Campion, "A More Ideal Vessel," and Elaine Blose’s steampunk Western "Wayward Brother" will whet your appetite. The dark fantasy and adventure continues in "Dark Archive," Sarah Kanning writes how Danielle from "Hidden Collection" must deal with the lingering effects of being possessed by a demon. Volume two mixes sequels from Gloria Weber, Justin Swapp, and Isaac Bell with new stories from Lester Smith, K.E. McGee, Adam Israel, Valerie Dircks, T.S. Rhodes, Elizabeth Shack, Daniel Alonso, and Nayad Monroe.

New York Times Bestselling author and Campbell award nominee Larry Correia presents an exclusive short story, "Son of Fire, Son of Thunder" co-authored by Steven Diamond, about an FBI paranormal investigator and a bad ass marine who knows the exact moment of his own death. Travel to the alternate history Earth of the "Red Bandanna Boys" by Patrick M. Tracy and find out how ruthless you have to be to survive the slums of St. Nikolayev. Follow "The Trail of Blood" by Alex Haig, a horrifying Western about a bounty hunter who wants vengeance, not money. Hunt for Nazis in a disturbing 1950’s America in "Hunters Incorporated" by Kelly Swails. Patrol the steaming jungles of Vietnam with a squad of soldiers in Lon Prater’s "Last Rites in the Big Green Empty." Then enter the mind of a godlike demon in Donald J. Bingle’s ambitions tale, "Dark Garden," or visit the creepy shadow world created by Richard Lee Byers in "Light and Dark."

Watch your back, the demons are coming.

Medusa's Daughter (2011) Read an Excerpt
Stone Cold I'm currently editing Medusa's Daughter, which is a love story set in ancient Greece.

MEDUSA’S DAUGHTER

“Can true love break the curse?”

A novel by

P. Genesse

Medusa’s daughter has inherited her mother’s terrible curse and longs to escape her lonely life on the shattered island where her mother and aunts have been exiled. But when a mysterious sailor washes ashore she falls in love, then discovers there might be a way for the curse to be broken. She must look into the eyes of her true love, but if he’s not, she will kill the only man she ever loved.

I'm posting the first draft of chapters one and two. I've recently finished writing the manuscript, which is 88,500 words right now (March 27, 2011). I've got more to do on it, but I hope you like how it starts. I've always been fascinated by Greek mythology and the Medusa myth has always been one that piqued my interest. The story came to me as I was reading up on the actual myth. There is no mention of Medusa having a daughter, but I thought that if she was indeed raped by Poseidon, there could be a child. What would she be like? How would her mother treat her? The story went from there. I've approached the tale with a more realistic slant and a dark tone. I really love the novel and can't wait to get it published someday.

Back Cover Copy:

Science fiction is the literature of what if, and steampunk takes the what if along a particular time stream. What if steam power was the prime force in the Victorian era? How would that era change, and how would it change the future?

From a Franco-British race for Kentucky coal to one woman’s determination to let no man come between her and her inventions . . . from an attempt to turn lead into gold which has far-reaching implications to a reporter’s cross-country airship journey to cover the story of a scientist out to tame the desert’s heat . . . from the hunt for a near-extinct creature to an attempt to rid Europe of the fey . . . from “machine whispers” to a Thomas Edison experiment gone awry, here are fourteen original tales of what might have been had steam powered the world in an earlier age.

Terribly Twisted Tales (2009) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Terribly Twisted Tales I was asked to write a story for the anthology, Terribley Twisted Tales by DAW Books, editor Jean Rabe. It's turned in and I just cashed the check. The idea was to take a fairy tale and twist it up. Like make Goldie Locks a big game hunter who was after bear and in the end she gets eaten by them.

I was going to do The Little Mermaid, by Hans Christian Anderson, but I re-read it and found it was like 50 something pages long. I just couldn't do it justice in around 3000 words. So, I found one of my favorite stories from when I was a kid. The story just got to me and I never forgot it. I took the story, paid my respects to the original writer and then made it my own. You probably know the story by Hans Christian Anderson, The Little Match Girl. Well, I wrote a story called, Revenge of the Little Match Girl. I took the nicest, sweetest and most sympathetic character and turned her into a homicidal pyromaniac. I mean come on, she sells matches!

Catopolis (2009) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Catopolis An editor, Janet Deaver-Pack asked me to write a story for the Catopolis anthology. It's about cats in the city. Good times. I wrote a story called, Kitty and the City. It's Sex and the City with cats and it's definitely the funniest story I've ever written. Poor Cassie, an American shorthair with an extreme shoe fetish, is having a lot of trouble finding a good tom.

Imaginary Friends (2008) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Imaginary Friends An editor, John Helfers bought a story from me called, Greg and Eli. I didn't have a lot of time to write this one, but it turned out to be one of my favorite stories. Actually, I really love this story. I didn't have a lot of time to do research or think about a lot of different ideas, so I went with what I knew, my own childhood in a small town in Nevada. The story is fiction, but it has the feeling of what I went through as a kid. A couple of my friends at work read it, and both cried at the end. I was very happy with that. Anyway, you'll find a sample of the story below.

Blue Kingdoms: Shades and Specters ($11) (2007) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Blue Kingdoms: Shades and Specters Between twilight and dawn, half-glimpsed things lurk in the swirling sea mist, long dead things that have clawed their way out of the darkest abyss, things that were better left entombed.

In this second volume of Blue Kingdoms Stories, you’ll find a host of specters, ghosts, monsters, and more . . . guaranteed to shiver your timbers.

For those of you who read my first Blue Kingdoms story, “The Pirate Witch,” and wanted more, you should enjoy “The Queen’s Ransom.” It’s the sequel to “The Pirate Witch,” in Pirates of the Blue Kingdoms, still available on my website, and features Maeve Tierney, the infamous Pirate Witch herself. If you haven’t read the first one, the second one is an independent story, but builds upon what happened in the first tale.

In "The Queen's Ransom" Maeve gets to see that going after her dead ex-husband's treasure is not the best idea, especially because she had a hand in his death.

The Pirate Witch in the Pirates of the Blue Kingdoms ($15) (2007) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Pirates of the Blue Kingdoms This is the story I wrote for the Blue Kingdoms anthology, based in the world that Steve Sullivan and Jean Rabe created. The book released in May of 2007. It's out now! Please order an authographed copy from me for $15 plus $ 3 shipping. It's published by Popcorn Press (www.popcornpress.com), which is a great small press that is up and coming. They're planning more Pirates of the Blue Kingdoms books in the next year. I can't wait!

This story features Maeve Tierney, who probably shouldn't have married the infamous pirate, Bull Tierney, because in the end he did what all pirates do--he went after another person's booty.

Below is a sample, the first page and a half of the story. I hope you enjoy it.

The Mob ($8 for the whole book or $1 for just the story) (2006) Purchase | Read an Excerpt
Furry Fantastic cover The Mob is my first short story and has been published in the Furry Fantastic anthology by DAW Books and came out on October 3, 2006. The anthology is about sentient animals. The Mob is your basic meerkat mafia story. Think Watership Down with meerkats. You can purchase it at all the big bookstores, Borders, Barne's & Noble (even Walmart) or online at Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.com. Or you buy just the story as an Ebook from the Sony Ebook store. Click on the purchase link above to go to the Sony Ebook Store.

The Mob came into being because the editor of the anthology, Jean Rabe, contacted me out of the blue and asked for a story. I had about a week to get it to her and in that time I managed to write The Mob. I've always loved meerkats, they are my favorite animal--long before Meerkat Manor on the Animal Planet came out. Ever since I'd heard about the anthology I had thought about writing a meerkat story for it. The day the story was due I was not happy with how it turned out--I needed more time! But I had a deadline--which I found out later was midnight on the deadline day. I sent it off to my great writer friend, Brad Beaulieu (visit him at www.quillings.com). He made a ton of suggestions and I frantically made the changes that I had thought about making before, but was too afraid to do with the limited time remaining. In the end, I incorporated the changes Brad suggested and the story was a big hit with Jean Rabe--and subsequently made it into the anthology as the lead story in its section, the non-cat/non-dog section of the book. Getting the lead story was very encouraging and without Brad's help I don't think the story would have turned out as well as it did. Writing seems like it's a solitary business, but even the best writers out there need someone to look at the work and offer suggestions.
